"If the shoe fits . . ."
"I'm sorry, Dani." He braked at the gate and turned to face her. His smile was self-deprecating and apologetic. "You're right, I guess. I'm an inverted snob."
"I like you anyway." She reached out to touch his hair.
Leaning forward, he settled his mouth against the corner of hers. "I have a ferocious appetite." She made a small murmuring sound of concession. "How about lunch?"
"Lunch!" She acted affronted and shoved him away.
"You don't expect me to be romantic on an empty stomach, do you?"
"That is asking a lot of a big, strapping boy like you, I suppose. But what did you have in mind for dessert?" I
"I'd love to discuss that with you,' he said, consulting his gold wristwatch, "but if we don't hurry, we're going to be late."
He drove to another remote spot. "Where are we?" Dani asked as he helped her out of the truck. "I thought we were-Is that a horse?"
Loaan tilted his head from side to side as he assessed the thoroughbred animal tied to the lower branches of a tree. "My opinion would be that that is
definitely a horse. Strictly my opinion, you understand."
"Oh, you!" She swatted the air in front of his face and then went toward the horse. It was bridled, but didn't have a saddle. "How did he conveniently get tethered out here in the middle of nowhere? With a Picnic basket, no less, at his feet."
"I've got very good people on my payroll."
She glanced around, seeing no trace of another human being. "I haven't seen any employees." "That's why they're good," he said, leering.
"They're supposed to be invisible. I wanted this to be just like in the movies. You know, where picnic baskets appear from nowhere and violin music pours from the heavens. That kind of thing."
She bit her lower lip to keep from laughing out loud. As had been his intention, she was thoroughly charmed. "But these magician employees forgot something. There's only one horse."
"On the contrary, those were my instructions. You have to ride with me."
"I see." She glanced toward the horse. Crossing her arms over her chest, she played devil's advocate. "Who's going to keep me on, riding bareback?"
His grin was pure, undiluted lechery. "The way I plan to hold you, you couldn't possibly fall off." "And the picnic basket?"
